Wild Horses I Have KnownThe author spent more than twenty years tracking and photographing wild horses. In pictures and text she documents the social behavior of these fascinating animals. Most of the pictures were taken in the Pryor Mountains, where the horses have been documented to be descendents of the horses brought to America by the Spanish Conquistadors. Harem life, stallion fights, birth and stud bands are pictured and discussed. A gallery of photographs in the back of the book illustrate twenty colors that have shown up in this special herd. REVIEWSStarred review from School Library Journal Best Books of the Year / Junior Library Guild Selection "Ryden's newest nature book is a delight --- not just for horse fanciers, but for anyone interested in animal behavior." Booklist "A nice combination of elegance and sound information about this distinct group of horses and the history of its presence in North America." Horn Book Magazine "Stunning full-color photographs show the mustangs running free, one of the last of this species that does; Ryden makes a convincing case for guaranteeing that they always will." Kirkus Reviews "An appendix on "The Colors of Horses" offers a lucious color photography gallery" Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books Scroll back and click "Hope's Books" to return to book list |
